Development moratorium will not reduce greenhouse gas emissions

North Cowichan council:

Thermoproof Windows has been a local manufacturer based in Chemainus for over 40 years. We currently employ over 35 staff and have a yearly payroll in excess of $2 million. A large percentage of our work supplies Cowichan Valley builders.

The moratorium that you are considering will greatly affect the livelihoods of good people that work to supply the building community in the Cowichan area.

As a member of the Natural Resources Canada Energy Task force, board member of Fenestration Canada, and member of the home performance stakeholder’s council, we recognize that greenhouse gas emissions in Canada are an issue. Focusing your efforts on new construction will not have the effect you desire. It is my recommendation that you focus your efforts on current inventory.

I would be pleased to meet with you to discuss some of the work that is being done across Canada. I can assure you that a moratorium has not been suggested by any of the groups as an effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
