Every time judges toss out cases for taking “too long” to come to trial, I cringe. I think that justice was not allowed to run its course. They of course use the opposite, but idealistic argument that taking too long is justice denied.
Should judges be able to toss out cases for taking “too long?” A definitive no. But they do it, they have the power. Can you imagine doctors saying that their patients have been waiting a year or more so we are just going to move on?
Governments representing the people of British Columbia, regardless of which stripe, make budgets based on overall priorities. The amount of available money is finite. They simply are unable to do all the things people want governments to do.
Should judges be able to jump to the head of the line, before health or education and the like? I say no. Why should judges be able to dictate to the government, i.e. the people of B.C. They can argue for their needs like everybody else.
After that, they should live with it like everybody else. That’s what people of B.C. want them to do and not abuse their lofty authority.
