Due process needed in bullying cases

Re: District wastes tax dollars while abandoning children facing constant bullying, Letters, May 25.

To the Editor,

Re: District wastes tax dollars while abandoning children facing constant bullying, Letters, May 25.

In May, your newspaper published a letter to the editor from a parent who made allegations about incidents of bullying.

Although the school was not named in the letter, parents recognized their school and, in particular the allegations that certain children had been involved in bullying behaviour. There were also allegations posted on Facebook.

In order to investigate what happened, a restorative justice session was held at the school, with the assistance of a facilitator and the RCMP.  Through this session, it was determined that while there had been incidents of conflict between certain children, this was not a situation where bullying took place.

Our schools take allegations of conflict and bullying seriously.

We would like to remind parents that when hearing allegations from their children regarding conflict, to please report to the teacher or principal and then give the school some time to ensure they can thoroughly check out the situation before publicly making allegations that may turn out to be false. Due process is necessary so that all parties are treated fairly.
