Voting system needs to be replaced

Editor, The Times:

Our current “first past the post” voting system needs to be replaced.

First past the post was developed in an era when only wealthy, white, male, land owners were allowed to vote.

It was designed as a two party system, largely to maintain the power and privilege in the hands of a few.

As our democracy has evolved we have recognized the right to vote for working people, women, indigenous peoples and people of other races.

It is now time to recognize that all voter’s views must be accurately represented.

It is time we joined the majority of the world’s democracies that have adopted proportional representation.
