The sudden death of Nicola Baker, a popular south Surrey high school teacher, at age 38 last month has had a ripple effect in Langley.
It is here that her husband, Sean, has made it his life’s work to help and protect unwanted and abused animals.
Sean Baker is the executive directory of Langley Animal Protection Society, and was fundamental in the construction of the Patti Dale Animal Shelter.
His work in the community has made him a favourite among local animal lovers in particular, and it is they who are spearheading an effort to help him through what one can only imagine is the most difficult time of his life.
There are also four children to consider who have lost their mother at far too young an age.
Nicola won’t be here to see each of them graduate from high school, but no doubt her dreams for them included an opportunity to continue expanding their horizons — possibly through post-secondary education.
A dinner scheduled for the Tap House & Eatery in Fort Langley on July 13 will help make that a reality.
The event will raise funds toward an education reserve for the Baker children, but it isn’t just a fundraiser. It is also an expression of shared sorrow and comfort from the community.
As one of his coworkers commented, “This fundraiser is our way to show Sean he is loved and supported.”
