EDITORIAL: Games need you, now

The B.C. Winter Games are coming to Greater Vernon Feb. 23 to 26, 2012, which may seem like a long way off but volunteers are needed to commit to helping with the great community event now so organizers can breathe a little easier.

Actually just last week 150 people signed up, bringing the total to a very respectable 800 and also shows a sense of momentum as the Games get closer. However, 2,000 volunteers will be needed to stage the Games, thus the need for even more to sign on the dotted line.

There are a whole host of different jobs required, certainly something of interest to those who wish to be involved in what will be a community-wide celebration of sport in the spotlight of an entire province.

So if you can lend a hand in any way to making Greater Vernon host a great event, and meet some amazing people and athletes at the same time, then consider and then please lend your support to the Games. It will be fun.

The new office on 31st Avenue is open for business Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and ready to accept volunteers. While you’re at the former site of the Vernon Flower Shop check out the attractive Games attire available for sale and keep in mind that all proceeds stay in the community.

People can also go to the website, 2012bcwintergames.ca, or call the office at 250-550-2012 and offer assistance.

The volunteer spirit in this community has always come through in the past and we’re confident it will once again but sooner is better than later when it comes to the Games.
