Welcome to the holidays: the time of year when we plan parties and dinners, buy gifts for our family and friends, and everything is merry and bright.
The snow is falling, and we’re going to have a white Christmas. In my family, we always celebrate in the days leading up to Christmas, and on Christmas Day. On Christmas Eve, we gather at my Nan and Poppa’s house for dinner the night before, and we usually have a sleepover and do Christmas presents and breakfast in the morning. My Nan always cooks this dish with bread and eggs and cheese, green onions, and ham. She layers it all together the night before, and puts it in the fridge overnight, before popping it into the oven on Christmas morning. It is one of my favourite things about Christmas morning.
On Christmas Day, we travel to our Dad’s house and do gifts there, spending the afternoon hanging out. It is my sister’s birthday, so we do cake and gifts for her. Then, off we go to my aunt and uncle’s house for a big family gathering. Their log house stands tall and beautiful, always decorated with a giant Christmas tree. The gift exchange is done in a frenzy.
At Nan’s, we hand out gifts and watch in anticipation as each person opens their special packages. At my aunt and uncle’s, gifts are passed around the room quickly, and you’ve always got something on the go.
Then, we do a big dinner with turkey and stuffing and all the fixings.
Things have changed a lot over the years. With my Gramma and Grampa not doing so well, and our great aunt spending time in her new home, the traditions have died down a lot.
The last time I went home for Christmas was in 2013, I think. And, that is the only time I have been home in my 10 years away. Now, I am without a Christmas tradition for myself, but I really enjoy getting together with friends for pre Christmas gatherings.
However you celebrate the holidays, I hope you are surrounded by people who love you. Whether it is family or friends, or your four-legged pal, enjoy the holidays. If you’re working, I hope you enjoy all of the people who come in on Christmas.
There is something nice about spending Christmas by yourself. Even though you might miss your family, know that they are in your heart and you are in theirs. Enjoy phone calls and written correspondance. Every year, I receive an outpouring of invites from people inviting me to Christmas Day dinners and festivities.
Whatever your traditions are, or if you’re creating new traditions, we wish you a happy holidays from the Golden Star.
