EDITORIAL: Help bring Games to life

Greater Vernon volunteers needed for B.C. Winter Games in February

February may seem like a long ways off but like so often happens in modern life, it will be here before you know it.

That’s why it’s important for Greater Vernon residents to think now about how they can help the area host the B.C. Winter Games in 2012.

The call has been issued and the task is demanding.

Organizers need to find 2,200 volunteers to  help stage the event that will bring a couple thousand athletes, coaches and officials to town.

This area has successfully rallied the volunteer support to host the Games twice before and we know we have the community spirit and giving nature to pull it off again in style.

More than 400 volunteers have already signed up to help the cause and there’s still plenty of time to gather more but that process starts today.

The concern is that some positions, like in accommodations, require criminal record checks that can take months to complete.

And if accommodations isn’t your first choice, there’s also volunteer opportunities in transportation, promotions, communications, security, special events, sport, Friends of the Games, food services, ceremonies, results and registration and administration and protocol.

Surely something for anyone who has the wish to give back to the community in a fun way that helps highlight the area to our guests, as well as a provincial audience on television.

To sign up as a volunteer, go to www.2012bcwintergames.ca.

And if anyone has some office space to donate to a great cause that benefits us all, call Akbal Mund at 250-550-0388 or Jim McEwan at 250-309-7753.
