EDITORIAL: School resumes for another year

Hundreds of students returned to school in the Cariboo Chilcotin Tuesday

Hundreds of students returned to school in the Cariboo Chilcotin Tuesday as the new school year has got underway.

That also means that many teachers and support staff are back on the job, including 20 new teachers and 20 new support staff who were hired to work throughout the district.

Returning Mountview Elementary School teacher, Ms. Shelly Peel, kicked off the school year with a special recognition. She was selected as one of three finalists in the community engagement category of the Premier’s Award for Excellence.

On Oct. 5, 2018, Ms. Peel will be joined by superintendent Mark Wintjes at Government House in Victoria when the winners will be announced.

If she wins, Ms. Peel will receive a $3,000 personal bursary for professional learning. Additionally Mountview School would receive $2,000 for professional learning.

We wish her the best of luck.

Last week in the Tribune Weekend Advisor we ran a cheque donation photo on our community builder page showing where the Royal Purple ladies had donated $1,000 to Staples for its program to help students in need of school supplies.

Kudos to the Royal Purple and to Staples for being mindful that September can be an expensive time of year for many families with children in school.

Finally, we hope everyone fine tunes their own scholastic minds to remember that school zones are back in effect from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each week day with a driving speed maximum of 30 kilometres per hour.

While driving to work Tuesday morning, we saw people driving quicker than that in school zones and our local RCMP enforcing the speed limit.
