Christmas is a special time of the year, a joyful time.
It’s a time for a rich dinner, gift exchanges, carolling or participating in any number of other Christmas traditions.
And more importantly, it’s a time to spend with family and friends.
For the past month, the signs of the Christmas season have been noticeable as people prepare for what is billed as “the most wonderful time of the year.”
But in the midst of the celebrations, it is important to remember there are those among us, right here in our community, who are in need, and their needs become more noticeable now.
For them, this is not necessarily a joyful, merry season.
Some are struggling financially and the added expenses of holiday celebrations can present problems.
Others who are alone may notice a deep sense of loneliness during Christmas.
Each year, in the weeks leading up to Christmas, there are initiatives to help those who are in need.
Food bank drives and the Summerland Fire Department’s Toys and Toonies for Tots and Teens initiative are helping to brighten the season for some who are in need within our community.
And the annual NeighbourLink Christmas dinner matchup, which helps to find homes for those who are alone on Christmas, has received a growing level of community support over the years.
These initiatives and others like them are helping to brighten the holiday season.
The kindness shown in this community year after year is impressive.
Some have opened their wallets and others have opened their homes in an effort to spread joy and Christmas cheer.
These efforts deserve to be recognized.
Generosity at this time of year can help to make the season bright.
