A classic car group is heading back to the Cariboo, one year after they first arrived, and exactly one year after the beginning of the 2017 wildfires.

This Sunday, classic cars, bikes, along with area residents, are invited to attend a ‘Rendezvous picnic in Williams Lake Stampede Park’ from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

It just so happens to be taking place across the street from Chuck’s Auto Supply where the business will be hosting its 4th Annual Show and Shine.

The picnic is the kickoff to what’s being billed as the Wildfire Recovery Cruise — an effort to support local businesses and to encourage tourists to return to the area.

Originally spearheaded by Lori and Vic Camrie of Vancouver Island Cruises (VI Cruises), the classic car group is encouraging other classic and vintage car and motorcycle enthusiasts to travel the wildfire corridor from Ashcroft to Quesnel.

The tour is scheduled to begin in Williams Lake Sunday, and to wrap up on July 15 at the Hot July Nights Car Show in 100 Mile House.

“This is a one-time occasion and it’s pretty casual,” the VI Cruises website states. “We hope you gather your friends, create a cruise that suits you and join thousands of other classic and vintage cars and motorcycle enthusiasts on the wildfire corridor. Explore the region and the towns, take your time and drop in at businesses which have identified themselves as cruiser or cycle rider friendly.”

As we near the one-year anniversary of the devastating wildfires of 2017, we hope the Wildfire Recovery Cruise takes off, filling Highway 97 with classic cars, trucks and motorcycles, throughout its entirety.
