Thanks to editor John Harding for his note in a recent paper encouraging us to write another letter reflecting our thoughts on the results of the settlement of the teachers’ strike.
Decisions hang in limbo. Who is going to decide what the class sizes and compositions will be? The struggle has been over who gets the final say in this critical issue. Christy Clark said recently that if they do not win the next court case they will appeal it to the Supreme Court of Canada.
The money spent on these court cases would be better channeled into the educational system. Fighting over the power to decide who is in the best position to know what the maximum learning environment for each child is, should be decided by the professionals which of course are the teachers. Children deserve to be in a situation where they can most effectively be motivated and stimulated to reach their full potential and become strong members of our society. Teachers need to be in classrooms where they can be the most productive and effective.
It appears that the governments objective is based on saving money and not on what is the best learning environment for each individual child. The rights of the government and what is right are two totally different things. We live in an economy where there is enough money to adequately fund a first-class educational system for our children, which are the future of this province and the free world.
