It is becoming pretty obvious that a federal election is in the offing. The television ads are already berating the obvious candidates and it is going to get nasty. Add to that the provincial and municipal elections and we are in for a whole lot of electioneering. The leadership candidates for both provincial parties are already making a whole lot of promises.
That said, it is this newspaper’s policy to not, repeat not, publish articles, letters or opinion pieces from candidates or their supporters. In order to have a level playing field this is the policy that must prevail.
The Sooke News Mirror will make every effort to contact and interview the candidates in the running for the various seats and we will report on events such as all-candidates meetings. They will be asked the same questions on issues of importance to Sooke voters.
With seven seats likely up for grabs around the local council table, the fight for the head of the table will be, if anything, an interesting one. Not one person on council presently has yet stated if they are running again or in what capacity. There are rumours, of course, and a lot of speculation. There are names being put forth in hushed tones, but no one has stepped forward.
This municipal election will be a interesting race and the record of each of the present councillors will be considered. We suspect there will be quite a number of candidates vying for a seat at the table. Now is the time to take in a council meeting or two, it’s report card time. And remember election promises are vacuous and rarely kept. They can say anything without having to follow through.
