Editor, The Times:
Once again it is February and a call goes for volunteers who wish join in the Heart and Stroke person-to-person campaign.
Hats off to all volunteers and supporters of the vast amount of charities in this community and surroundings.
It is very difficult to organize Heart and Stroke canvassing with the lack of volunteers to service this area. It must be even harder for those who do not help or support Heart and Stroke to find excuses. So, I had to ask myself, “Why do I do this?” I thought about my childhood years, and remember volunteering at the Riding Club grounds in the Coldstream Valley.
Although I had no horse to ride at the time, my sister and mother were active and volunteered their time as well. My mom was secretary, treasurer or something. I know she had a photostat machine in the basement that stunk up the whole house. At that time my dad was a volunteer firefighter and I can remember a second phone, the fire phone, bright red was in my brother’s bedroom. The phone we were never allowed to touch.
Later years, my mom volunteered with hospice. A girlfriend and I in Grade 8 became Candy-stripers at the hospital and I did that for two years. My dad rallied for, and helped establish a fire hall in the Vernon area.
I am sure there are more, examples but these stand out. I believe it is through my parent’s example that I have volunteered. What a great example they have been throughout my life. So, the question actually becomes, “What drives me to do this?” Simply, it was nurtured and grew to be a part of me.
What a wonderful gift was given to me, what a wonderful gift you can give to your children. Lead by example.
If you would wish to volunteer this year to canvas in your neighborhood in Clearwater or Vavenby, please contact Wendy at 250-674-6806. Little Fort’s contact is Barb at 250-677-4367.
Once again Safety Mart has donated space to set up a table to receive your donations.
Stay heart healthy,
Wendy Grimm
