To the Editor,
Re: ‘I won’t answer to the PMO anymore:’ Alberta MP Rathgeber, News Bulletin Daily, June 7.
Brent Rathgeber quit the Conservative caucus saying “we’re not going to vote like trained seals.”
Finally, a politician with principles.
It’s no wonder the number of voters keeps decreasing every election. Perhaps it’s because governments have usurped democracy and replaced it with oligarchy.
They no longer represent the will of the people, but their party’s agenda.
We vote believing MPs will represent us, their constituents. Instead they blindly follow – like trained seals – the dictates of their leader, otherwise risking being ousted from caucus.
Democracy will be restored only if parliaments return to secret ballots. This way MPs will be able to vote on important issues according to the will of their constituents.
I have decided never to vote again until democratic principles are restored.

Under the present system, it is possible for Prime Minister Stephen Harper to commit Canada to foreign adventures such as war or to treaties that could undermine the nation’s sovereignty.
