Financial contributions shouldn’t equal support
From several recent letter sto this paper I am given to understand that the Motorsport Circuit is offering financial or other support to local non-profit organizations. One letter suggests that the recipients owe the Motor Circuit group to attend the hearings to show their support.
I do not know what the facts are here. I am quite aware that the non-profit groups, having served many years on several boards, need funding They provide a valuable service to the community. I think this is a sad reflection on society, us, that these services have to depend of funding from groups that might be even in conflict with their mandate. An example was recieiving funds from casinos to deal with problems caused by gambling.
We are dealing with a lot of ecological threats which are difficult to deal with as it is. We are asked to cut back on our use of fossil fuels, electricity use, and water. It is very difficult to deal with many of these as we do have to get to work, heat our houses and do our laundry. How do we justify adding to this threat for the amusement of some?
In today’s Times Colonist an article on pollution claims that any concentration of pollution can be deadly and CO2 emissions continue to rise. There will be a Climate Strike in Victoria on Nov. 29.
The noise is a nuisance to those who live nearby, and probably much more than a nuisance to many. It is an ecological threat to all.
Promises of financial or other kinds of support for community should not be how decisions are made for what we want, not only for our own community, but maybe for the world.
