When I woke up Monday morning, Jan. 11, I got the unstoppable urge to buy a cigar, stamp my fist on my desk and demand someone get me pictures of Spiderman.
I have moved from reporter to editor at the Quesnel Cariboo Observer.
For those who don’t yet know me, before joining the Observer in August I grew up, worked at papers throughout, and went to school in Manitoba. My first experience at local papers was freelancing at my local paper in Gimli, Man., doing post-game hockey recaps.
EDITORIAL: A Manitoba hello from your new Quesnel Observer reporter
While working at a coffee shop I would lock the doors, run to the game and then come back after to finish cleaning up. I want to carry that kind of passion into the editor’s position.
Untrained, I started as a summer student in Gimli, helping layout the print product and write. I worked at papers further south in Manitoba, before attending Red River College in Winnipeg. After college, I worked a year at the Flin Flon Reminder in northern Manitoba, before moving to Quesnel this past summer.
What I love about working at a weekly paper with a small editorial team is the ability to meet new people and learn new things every day. From stories about local podcasts, to profiles of major junior hockey coaches and city council meetings I hope to bring those conversations to our readers every day, and share what I’ve learned from community members.
