I am appalled at the thought of 700,000 tonnes of garbage per year being shipped from Metro Vancouver to be incinerated at very high temperatures at a facility in Duke Point.
Vancouver Island is not very large. Surely there must be enough land on the Mainland where a facility of this kind could be located. Why spend thousands of dollars shipping this garbage across the water, especially in winter, when the sea can become rough enough for ferries to be canceled?
Nanaimo has been working very hard recently to become a more attractive “green” city for tourists often arriving in Nanaimo by ferry at Duke Point.
I believe there is already one such facility burning our food waste and so on. Do we really need another facility there — especially if it is spewing out obnoxious fumes just as a ferry full of tourists arrive?
It’s very smelly and very un-green.
I hope all Regional District of Nanaimo directors come to the conclusion that having such a facility at Duke Point is a very bad plan that should go where it belongs — in the incinerator.
I also hope that Directors Bill Veenhof, Julian Fell and Howard Houle — even though they appear to be concerned — will have no more keeping cards close to chest.
Get off the fence and support Director Alec McPherson in this serious problem.
