HEROES – The 9th annual passage of Discovery Passage went off with the blessings of the sun, the tides, the moon, the wind and currents.
We welcomed paddlers from France, the Czech Republic and New York as well as Powell River, Nanaimo, Courtenay and Comox. Once again the Brave Hearts Dragon Boat team graciously added their strengths to the crossing group as well as a new group from Campbell River – those ladies in pink from Habitat for Humanity.
All 115 paddlers were heroes. Our hosts at Cape Mudge Village welcomed us ashore with drum, song and warm greetings. We continue to build bridges of friendship from each side across Discovery Passage.
How great is that!
Just in case of an accident the Coast Guard and Kevin Kavanagh, Bob and Katherine Naylor, Lionel Botting, and Pat James of the Ripple Rock Power and Sail Squadron provided their boats for safety. Emil Fischer was also present with a safety boat. We thank them all for their help in past years and for their continued support this year. Other helpers at this event were Lance and Eileen Klaasen, Doug and Pat Woods, Walter and Sawyer van Lieshout, Kyle, Jenny and Ashton Birchard, Caitlin LaForge and other members of our family. Without the help of all these people this event would not have been possible. We appreciate your help and sincerely thank all of you.

HEROES – My thanks to the post office staff and post office employees at Shoppers Drug Mart in Willow Point.
I had some important papers I needed to get in the mail with a tight deadline.
I wouldn’t have made the cutoff without their assistance.

HEROES-The Quadra Island ferry captain and crew deserve much appreciation for their timely action on the morning of Friday, Aug. 21.
The 0900 sailing was as usual very busy and there was an ambulance call to respond to. The ferry left the dock at 0840 and was back by 0905.
When a medical emergency is involved, being five minutes late for a 0930 appointment is not an issue.
I am proud of the efficient crew and the good humoured passengers.

ZEROS– A big zero to the mayor and council for not respecting the public opinion on the Robron Park upgrade project.
I don’t know what I feel more of, disgust or anger that once again, city politicians are jamming their wishes through and not considering the citizens’ vote on this very, very expensive operation.
If you want people to move to this city, you are not sending a very positive message.
P.S. And please don’t do a crappy job on the landscaping like you did on the kids’ playground.
It looks like a cheap afterthought as there are no benches for parents, no shade covering for our hot summers and no water drinking fountain!!!
