Hockey dirty play and brutality need to be dealt with swiftly

Hockey referees need to be as diligent as those in other sports.

Editor: The majority of fans may be greatly disappointed if the NHL and its players can’t come to a satisfactory agreement regarding salaries paid, and the upcoming season is cancelled.

Not being an ardent hockey fan, I won’t be greatly affected. As I watch hockey, I am aware of the vast discrepancies in refereeing as compared to other sports that I prefer, football and soccer, for instance.

In these sports, dirty play and brutality are reason for instant discipline, and often dismissal from further play.

I believe that a better game could be had if hockey adopted the same regulations.
