Housing staff did a great job in helping people

Services were quickly available for displaced residents from the Elm building fire.

Editor: My son (28 years old), who has learning disabilities, is one of the displaced victims from the fire that happened in the Elm building on April 3.

This was the first place he had ever lived in on his own. He only moved in three weeks prior to the fire.

You can imagine the fear and anxiety it caused him when he was evacuated and saw the fire. He called me, with great fear in his voice, saying “Mom, there’s a huge fire.”

My drive to him was filled with a million scenerios. From the moment I arrived, the staff at Langley Lions Senior Citizens Housing Society were so supportive of everyone.

They had services from the community to assist all the tenants from the Elm building, they had a safe warm place for all to go, provided food, blankets, a pharmacist for those who couldn’t get their medications, emergency response team, Salvation Army, counselling services and more — all within the first hour.

I was so impressed with their evacuation plan. It made me feel that my son was in great hands. As a result of their organized plan, the tenants seemed less distraught. The staff at LLSCHS certainly deserve a huge thank you.
