Regarding Jeff Nagel’s article July 12, where he quotes Delta Mayor Lois Jackson and other mayors as supporting a vehicle levy or a road pricing system rather than an increase in property taxes.
Do these mayors not realize that homeowners and car owners are the same taxpayer?
It’s time we thought of a way to increase property tax revenue to municipalities without raising taxes for homeowners.
Here is one way: Allow each owner of a large detached home to convert the home into at least two strata units. It would not change the look of the neighbourhood. It would allow seniors to age in place and still sell part of their property to others and it would increase tax revenue for municipalities.
It’s time we considered more innovative alternatives in Metro Vancouver.
