In Our Opinion: Runway rant on Prince Rupert Airport Authority

Making changes without discussing it first with the volunteer board members is what has left a bad taste in some mouths

In coup d’état fashion, the city removed a clause in the Airport Authority’s constitution to allow its own officials and employees to populate the volunteer-based society that manages the airport.

Sure, the BC Societies Act required the constitution to be updated, but making changes without discussing it first with the volunteer board members is what has left a bad taste in some mouths.

Which may be why, Don Scott, Judy Fraser and Kelly Sawchuck contacted the Northern View. The first two voiced concern, the latter stated he thinks it’ll be better logistically but he is “anxiously waiting to see how it’s going to work out” — all three have been longtime members of the board and had no idea the city was changing the fundamental structure of the society.

For the city, streamlining the complex governing structure of the airport may make total sense — the airport ferry bleeds $800,000 annually, and the airport is owned by the city — but this action with no regard for the volunteers speaks volumes.
