Lack of compassion

I am completely appalled by the lack of compassion Councillor Charlie Fox and Councillor Jordan Bateman showed by bringing forward an inappropriate motion on an RCMP investigation of the mayor, at Monday’s council meeting. They were fully aware of the seriousness of the health issue of Mayor Rick Green’s family member.

Editor: I am completely appalled by the lack of compassion Councillor Charlie Fox and Councillor Jordan Bateman showed by bringing forward an inappropriate motion on an RCMP investigation of the mayor, at Monday’s council meeting.

I agree with Councillor Mel Kositsky that it is not the job of councillors to get involved with an RCMP investigation. The motion was also completely inappropriate, as councillors were well-informed of what prevented the mayor from attending the meeting. They were fully aware of the seriousness of the health issue of Mayor Rick Green’s family member.

This family is going through potentially one of the most difficult times of their lives, and this motion being put forward while the mayor was absent due to family illness was sneaky, distasteful and cheap politics, in my opinion. It is unforgiveable.

The election is months away and some members of this council continue to be more interested in mudslinging than working together. Whether councillors agree with the mayor or not on political issues, it would seem that when councillors have been informed of the seriousness of a health-related crisis in the mayor’s family, he and his family are deserving of compassion and understanding.

This political grandstanding could have been left for another day. To attack the mayor at this time is unconscionable. This is not the time for sleazy politics.

Thank you to Councillors Kositsky, Bob Long, Steve Ferguson and Bev Dornan, all of whom voted against this motion, and to Councillor Kim Richter, who confirmed to me on the phone that she would not have supported this motion.

This is yet another reason we need to encourage people to get out to vote in the upcoming municipal election.

Please keep the Green family in your prayers.
