Let’s get involved

Ye-hah! The Stanley Cup playoffs are getting underway.

Fortunately, they go on for weeks on end and many games will be re-broadcast for our viewing pleasure.

That said, there are a couple of important meetings coming up and they should take precedence over the games we might miss on the tube.

Of course, these meetings are only important if we care how much we’re going to be taxed and what our hard-earned tax dollars are going to be spent on.

And we should be – shouldn’t we?

Tonight (April 13) the District of 100 Mile House is unveiling its proposed five-year financial plan at 7 p.m. in the council chambers.

Year after year, the councillors update their five-year plan, and they hold a meeting to show it off, but no one comes.

Obviously, everyone is completely satisfied how council is spending the taxpayers’ money, so no one is going to complain if council decide it needs to increase taxes to bring water and sewer systems up to federal health standards, or something like that.

Hey, don’t worry – let’s all enjoy the hockey game.

On the bigger, national stage, we have all five Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo federal candidates coming to 100 Mile House to try to convince us to send one of them to Ottawa to represent us.

They will be debating and answering questions in the Valley Room behind The Lodge on Easter Monday (April 25)

The two-hour showdown begins at 7 p.m., and it will be the only time we will see the fantastic five together in the same room during the campaign.

This will be our opportunity to forget about all the attack ads and the mudslinging by their leaders.

Instead, we will be able to hear what they have to say about their party’s planks, and listen carefully to their promises and how they react to our questions and those of their opponents.

We need to determine if the one we vote for will be our representative in Ottawa, or if he or she will be representing their party in our riding.

Hey, maybe it will be a travel day for the Canucks.
