The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 51 has challenged its members to help others. When ordering takeout food or buying groceries, we have asked our members to think of those people in our community who have lost their jobs.
We challenged them to donate to the Salvation Army or Nelson Community Food Centre or alternatively to order a meal at a local restaurant for someone they know is struggling financially. Basically when they go to the grocery store or order food from a restaurant to think about all the people who aren’t able to do that. On the first day of the challenge, we heard that $500 had been donated.
The Nelson Legion has historically financially supported the Salvation Army and Nelson Community Food Centre but with the pandemic we are unable to hold our fundraising meat and 50/50 draws. Therefore, we have reached out to our membership to pick up the community support function of the organization.
We would like to extend this challenge to the Nelson community. We have asked our membership (200-plus) to advise us what they donate and we would be willing to track others’ donations via our email rclbr51@gmail.com. Thanks and stay safe.
