LETTER: A tip for those travelling outside Chilliwack for medical care

Get a note from your doctor, letter writer cautions

If you are older and need to travel outside of Chilliwack for medical care – I am betting there is a ton of us – then here is something you should know.

My tax return was audited and travel, meals, parking etc. were denied because I didn’t provide a letter from the referring doctors that stated these services were not available within 40 kilometres.

The fact that we were referred to these specialists and indeed one involved a medical procedure not available in Chilliwack did not matter without the letter.

So now I must ensure my doctors (who have nothing better to do, I am sure) will write me a letter stating that it is necessary. This requirement went right over my head at the time. So, to get this right in the future, when my specialist phones and tells me an appointment has been made with a heart specialist in New West, I can let him know this must be in writing.
