Letter: Anti-SOGI sign at Langley protest is the reason SOGI needed

A boy at a June 19 rally held a sign opposing the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity program.

Dear Editor,

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and when I saw the photo on page A9 of the Langley Advance of a person hiding behind a sign that read ‘SOGI is for perverts’, I realized how true that statement is.

I have no children attending school anymore, so I am purely a spectator, however, my understanding of SOGI (yes, I Googled it) is not to try to convert students in any way or teach sex education, but to foster a tolerant environment for those who may feel different from mainstream society.

I know there are a great number of wonderful parents that teach their children to be tolerant and compassionate humans, but unfortunately, not all children are so lucky and receive no direction.

The mere fact of the content of the sign conveys intolerance and hate. I truly do not understand anyone who would be against inclusion and acceptance of everyone.
