Dear editor,
When I first read Mr. Brogan’s letter to the editor (Is the Comox Valley growing too quickly? May 24 Record) I thought it was one of those tongue-in-cheek attempts at humour.
But then I wondered, can this guy be serious? Doesn’t he realize that he is part of the problem of “new development and changes in the Comox Valley?”
He mentions Costco and Thrifty Foods and countless other commercial and residential developments, but aren’t they just following him and the thousands of other transplants from Alberta and Vancouver? They weren’t here when there were fewer customers.
When I arrived in the Valley more than 40 years ago the area population was maybe 30,000, which has more than doubled now. That increase is thanks to Mr. Brogan and all those others who discovered how beautiful life is in our Valley.
What on earth did he think would happen when all the people came here wanting the same services they enjoyed in their previous life, creating their demand for a Costco and a Walmart?
The beauty of the Valley is a magnet for all those poor souls who spend hours in their cars commuting, whose atavistic desire for forest and mountain cannot be met by high rises and traffic jams.
I would give Mr. Brogan one piece of advice.
He could follow Donald Trump’s example and build a wall around the Comox Valley just to keep the hordes out. Then perhaps he would be able to “pursue policies and mindset which improve the levels of contentment for residents of the Comox Valley.”
Bob Sabell,
Comox
