Dear Mission community members:
Can we speak about it? Is our hospital emergency room adequate for our growing community?
Recently I experienced, first-hand, the need for emergency care at Mission Memorial Hospital and I am left with lingering questions from the dire outcome. My late wife of 45 years walked into the emergency room at Mission Memorial Hospital just after midnight on May 14, 2018. She was experiencing a swollen neck and some difficulty breathing.
After some time with her early that morning in the emergency department, she insisted that I go home and get some rest. One half hour later I was called and faced with my darkest fear. My life was forever and unexpectedly altered.
My beautiful, healthy and whole wife had been taken from me, our kids and our grandkids.
I am sharing this unfortunate event with the Mission community to gather input and focus attention on our need for adequate care.
Mission is one of the fastest growing municipalities in B.C. Can the ever-increasing population rest assured that their tax dollars are going towards local and accessible health care and medical services?
Should Mission expect a safe and properly provisioned (equipment, staff, space) emergency room? Should we – could we? – have our emergency room audited or evaluated by emergency room experts to determine the needs of our emergency room and our community demographics?
We have formed a community review panel to gather facts, figures and other people’s experiences, to create a report that we can deliver to our political leaders.
If you wish to share your experience at Mission Memorial Hospital and would like to help us create an accurate report, please email us at:
