LETTER – Cancelling the Mile of Flowers plant-in was a shortsighted decision by the City of Courtenay

Dear editor,

Dear editor,

That the City would cancel the planting of Courtenay’s Mile of Flowers is shameful.

What could planting flowers possibly have to do with spreading a virus? Nothing.

There is no reason social distancing couldn’t be observed. People would be wearing gloves.

How could it possibly be more ‘dangerous’ than going into a food store or bank, or going to work every day?

Besides, since all the shut-down, stay-at-home orders have been in place, the south stretch of Cliffe Avenue has become a race track, well-traveled all day long – many aiming to stay six feet apart at a big box store for an hour or more.

And now we can’t plant flowers!

You’re going in the wrong direction.

You should close down Cliffe Avenue on a Sunday afternoon so families and folks can go out and plant the flowers for summer beauty.

Then those good people who do go and plant wouldn’t have to listen to the constant noise of cars and trucks, and breathe in the foul air spewed from the relentless traffic. Therein is the real health hazard.

Now is the time to plant flowers, outdoors, on a quieted city street, have seedlings dropped off every 10 feet, Families, individuals come and plant. Many sharing in a pleasant task.

It’s that simple. Let’s show some sensibility here folks.

Marcia Haley,

Courtenay
