When I need to drive around Nelson this winter, I am thankful we have a contract with the City and YRB to keep the roads clear. Driving becomes much safer and efficient.
When in pedestrian mode the story is very different. Even though there is a residential sidewalk clearing bylaw (3156), its enforcement is complaint driven. Should we not use the road paradigm for sidewalks and pedestrian safety?
What ever happened to the notion of ‘social contract’ where people work together for the safety and convenience of all? Waiting for summer or registering complaints against hundreds of your neighbours does not seem to provide an acceptable story for those travelling on foot this winter.
