Editor: The following is an open letter to the Township of Langley, re: the off-leash dog park in the 19800 block of 70 Avenue. I am speaking on behalf of dozens of locals in the neighbourhood that I have chatted with who are as disappointed with this park as I am.
Every day, no matter the time, you can find somebody with their dog off leash outside of this park.
It is because the park is unwelcoming to both dogs and people. It is dirty, dusty, too small, and unkempt.
Very little thought appears to have gone into the planning of this off-leash park in comparison to the one in Brookswood or other ones to be found throughout Surrey.
There are spots to the northwest and southwest of the fenced area that could have been included as part of the dog park. The spaces are of no use for sports or pedestrians and remain empty rather than being enjoyed by park users and their pets.
Inside the fenced area one is met with either mud during inclement weather or a dustbowl in dry weather.
If the dogs are chasing after a ball, the dirt that is stirred up is enough to send everyone out. For any mid-sized or larger dog, it is simply not big enough to even throw a ball.
Is there any way the fencing could be expanded to include the two grassy areas? Also, could grass be put in?
I welcome any feedback from the Township on how this park could be improved upon.
Michele Lavery,
Langley
