LETTER – District should encourage recycling, not make it more difficult

Dear editor,

Dear editor,

RE: CSWM may close recycling depots – Nov. 19 Record

We have managed our waste so that we have less than one trash can picked up every two weeks, and we have deposited our defined recyclable materials at the Courtenay Country Market bins for the past 21 years. I was surprised when the system changed to ‘single stream’ a few years ago, but I am personally familiar with the challenges of keeping recycle streams free of contraries. I know that every stream needed to be regulated anyway, so doing it once on a single stream was technically and apparently economically possible. For us and many others, it has been so simple to accumulate material in garage or carport, load a vehicle once every four to six weeks when it suits us, and take it to the CCM bins. Segregated or single-stream, both worked for us.

I should expect the regional district to encourage depositing of recyclable materials, not make it more difficult. For the rural areas, cutting stuff like cardboard into itty-bitty pieces and hauling it down long driveways to pile it up in an ugly mess on the roadside is stupid. A bunch of plastic bins lined up out front is not going to happen! I think many of us will simply not play that silly game and our contribution to recycling will drop to zero. We can use our imaginations to find options that do not include recycling.

Mr. Edwin Grieve’s comment “We have to grow up here” is insulting, and the comment will be remembered.

David A. Kelly,

Courtenay
