A letter writer says her daughter was targeted with harassment because she had a Washington license plate. (State Department of Licensing)

LETTER: Don’t judge a car by its plates

Kimberly Sandhoff's daughter has been harassed for her Washington license plate

Editor:

My daughter has recently moved back home and settled in the town of Quesnel after living in the U.S. for 22 years.

My husband and I immigrated with her for employment as a child. The city of Quesnel was where we began our life together and birthplace to our firstborn son. My family has even donated items from my father’s estate to your local museum.

Her father passed away from cancer just this year and we were planning on bringing his remains to be buried there. On Friday, May 14, she finished her quarantine (as required) and went into town to finish her business and get herself settled in town and begin her fresh start, as a Canadian citizen.

However, she ran into people yelling at her and bullying her as she tried to do her business merely because she had Washington state plates on her vehicle. She can’t register yet in B.C. until she gets her paperwork. What is wrong with your town? What happened to the wonderful Canada we proudly spoke of to our American neighbours?

I’m ashamed to have my daughter go through this, and am more ashamed of all Canadians for behaving this way towards one of their own. I hope the good people of the city of Quesnel somehow find a way to address this issue and find a way to welcome home former residents.

Thank you for your help in doing so.

Kimberly Sandhoff
