Letter: Enough is enough

Let's take our ballots to Service B.C. and give ProRep a try

I’ve attended meetings that were basically about scheduling another meeting.

You too?

Well, we’re experiencing this when asked to have further study about proportional representation before we vote to adopt it on a trial basis for the next two provincial elections.

Criticisms on the implementation of this referendum are just a delay tactic.

Since 1977, there have been 14 studies by government, academic institutions and citizens’ assemblies about ProRep. All have given thumbs up.

Here in B.C., in 2005, there was a referendum suggested by a Citizens’ Assembly under the Liberal government.

Almost 58 per cent of respondents favoured ProRep, but the government decided a 60 per cent “super majority” was needed, thereby maintaining the false majority scenario that served them.

Over 90 countries have various forms of ProRep voting systems and not one has reverted to FPTP which is not a truly democratic system.

Enough of everlasting studies and commissions and surveys and polls. Let’s take our ballots to Service B.C. and give ProRep a try.

The deadline for receipt of ballots is Nov. 30.
