Oh dear, the deer debate gets more and more convoluted. I despaired over the naming of fawns; it implied they were cuddly pets. I laughed at the ridiculousness of calling them lunch and dinner; even if harvesting them were acceptable they would yield almost no meat.
Today’s letter, suggesting that writer should grow vegetables to feed the homeless, has me exasperated. The deer destroy vegetable gardens. I try to grow vegetables to feed my family. Kale is right out: the deer eat it all. Tomatoes? Only on the porch. Last year deer topped my tomatoes setting them back weeks and weeks; even my potatoes, which are toxic, get browsed regularly, reducing the yield. These deer must be very hungry indeed to eat potato plants.
And none of this considers safety, which should overrule all other considerations. Our neighbor was attacked while walking his little dog along the sidewalk.
Please, full speed ahead with deer birth control. Treat every doe.
