LETTER: Gang violence comes to Lower Mainland

Harvey Andrew of Agassiz reflects on life with L.A. gang violence

Dear editor:

I first came across the term “gang-related” while living down in Los Angeles in the 1980s. The street gangs turned the L.A. streets into a war zone 24 hours a day. It was very common to hear gunshots, mostly from hand guns. Every now and then, you heard the military-type AK-47s and AR-15s.

Yes, the street gangs had their hands on military-grade, full auto rifles.

Now the Los Angeles “gang-related” shootings have found their way to our very own Lower Mainland. It’s all too common to hear “gang-related” shootings on the local nightly news. Police chiefs throughout the Lower Mainland will be getting together on how to get a handle on the gang problem.
