LETTER: Glyphosate ban is fear-mongering and pseudoscience

Re: “RDCK wants province to ban herbicide glyphosate

This misguided effort is a result of fear-mongering by pseudoscientists who believe that juries are more knowledgable about glyphosate than the scientific community.

IARC’s move to classify glyphosate as a “possible” carcinogen is a singular event that is not supported by any other agency in the world. A little research shows that the individual responsible for the new classification signed a lucrative contract with a group looking to start litigation for glyphosate harms while working for IARC.

This glaring conflict of interest has created as much misinformation as has the flawed and retracted and flawed Serrilinni study.

If Health Canada supports the idea that the product is safe if applied as recommended I will accept their recommendation over misleading and flawed fear-mongering.

Nelson city council has been hoodwinked by anti-GMO groups into not buying genetically modified plants for parks in the past. The idea that the RDCK is pursuing a glyphosate ban is a continuation of woo on a much grander scale.

I would advocate that pseudoscience or fear-mongering be avoided rather than followed. Failing this I am almost certain that moves to ban vaccines, mandate crystal healing, and covering the cost of vaginal jade eggs by medicare will follow.

People need to become scientifically literate and critical in their thinking. We all need to recognize woo for the misleading pap it is.
