LETTER: Gone to pot(holes)

From reader R. Johnson

As a retired highways regional operations employee, I wonder when we will see some proper performance and action in response to complaints where road hazards are plain as the nose on everyone’s face.

To report hazards to the district highways manager and road and bridge contractor seems a waste of time. See the photo here of a deteriorated manhole on Vernon Street (Highway 3A). This is one of several through the city of Nelson on highway.

It’s a pass the buck item. We pay two times for excess staff in highways administration and contractor ranks to find and schedule repairs. But over five months a blind eye was cast over several locations. Yet we continue to pay.

Our late highways engineer, Merril Sproule, would turn over in his grave to see the deterioration of his area of expertise.

Shame on the current highways management for allowing the very highways system we drive on to become a steering killer system for automobiles and trucks travelling through areas of beautiful B.C. on roads that are not so beautiful. Please give your heads a shake and try again. Where is your dedication and respect for your position and taxpayer dollars?
