Editor: Re: Highrise apartments in Langley.
While I realize people need housing and there is apartment building going on in every inch of Langley City and Township, I was appalled by the proposal of 26- and 34-storey, ugly skyscraper-type buildings.
One of the reasons I originally moved to Langley many years ago was the absence of a ‘city looking’ landscape.
When I drive into other areas in and around Vancouver my comment is, “Why do people want to live in a city with such ugly tall buildings that ruin the landscape?”
The City slogan that is on the sign at 208 Street and Fraser Highway — ‘Where city and country meet’ — made me feel that we would always have that country feeling, along with the necessities of a city but without looking and feeling like we were in Vancouver.
The country-nature part is quickly fading away, trees are being cut, more and more condos being built, and now this?
We may need to expand as all places grow and change but is this what we really want to become — just another city looking suburb that eventually will only have a few parks to visit, no lovely country in and around the various areas of Langley, and highrise apartment buildings blocking the sky?
If we can’t use a model of how to combine nature and living spaces and keep the original beauty that Langley possesses then we are just another ugly, overpriced suburb of Vancouver.
Please consider not putting the highrises up. It’s ugly, spoils the beauty of the landscape, and it is actually unnatural and unhealthy for people to be living high up off the ground.
The City and Township councils really need to change their direction to protect Langley and keep as much nature as possible while building living spaces for people.
Infrastructure should be preserved to support all the growing population as well as be a model of how to grow without losing the beauty of Langley.
We don’t want cages just to put human beings in.
