Letter: Indiscriminate destruction’ of war must end

Schools, hospitals and even United Nations designated shelters are being bombed.

To the editor:

Imagine being under unrelenting bombing attacks and have nowhere safe to go.

Schools, hospitals and even United Nations designated shelters are being bombed.

This is what is happening to the people of Gaza for more than three weeks. At the time I write this letter, the death toll is over 1,200, mostly civilians, a third of which are children.

If Hamas rocket attacks on Israel are wrong, the disproportionate retaliation is  unacceptable. In the words of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, Israel  is “pummeling” Gazans with “indiscriminate destruction.”

While this is happening, our leaders, mainly Stephen Harper and now Christy Clark, are affirming their faithful support for the State of Israel. I am appalled.

On the streets around the world, hundreds of thousands of people, including Israelis, have marched in solidarity with Gazans.  In Kelowna there were about 100 last Saturday to protest. Global citizens are calling for a ceasefire but also for a long lasting solution for peace in the region—the lifting of  the siege of Gaza.  I support that.
