There have been collapses of the glacial till that makes up the benchlands along the lakeshore

Dear Editor:

I have lived in Summerland about 23 years. During this time there have been numerous collapses of the glacial till that makes up the benchlands along the Summerland lakeshore.

The most notable of these occur along the highway, the Summerland hill and numerous others from Crescent Beach all the way to Penticton.

This demonstrates the instability of glacial till with agricultural and other activity from above and vibration on road and highway traffic from below.

This is accentuated by irrigation on the benchlands above and construction clearing and sudden rains causing collapses and mudslides blocking the road to Crescent Beach.

Looking at the tilting grave markers at Peach Orchard Cemetery is another indication of the instability of glacial till.

Also look at the problems above Peach Orchard Park and the red zone further south.

Consider all millions of dollars spent over the years for repairs and clearing mudslides in this area.

All this can illustrate the great cost risks to Summerland taxpayers and property owners in the region.

Then consider the danger to the aquifer supplying water to the fish hatchery.

All of this is all before any further activity is considered.
