LETTER: Keep an ophthalmologist in Nelson

From reader Birthe W. Achtner

Re: “Nelson’s only ophthalmologist to retire in February,” Jan. 2

It was disconcerting to receive the information that with the retirement of Dr. Neville Maytom there will be no ophthalmic surgeon based in Nelson.

The Interior Health Authority continues to cut services in Nelson. The majority of the population in our area is based in Nelson and up the lake to Kaslo and Meadow Creek and with the many cuts to services at Kootenay Lake Hospital since 2002 this majority has had to deal with longer travel times to get to specialists in Trail as well as to the hospital, not to mention the difficulty of getting there during the winter months.

It would behoove Interior Health Authority to reconsider this very inconsiderate decision and live up to the agreement of having Kootenay Lake Hospital continue to be the regional centre for ophthalmic surgery with an ophthalmic surgeon based in Nelson.
