LETTER: Kudos for Bombers article

Re:Bombs away: LVR considering dropping Bombers name,” April 11

Congratulations are to be offered reporter Tyler Harper in his article on the changing of the name for the LVR Bombers and to the Star’s resident historian Greg Nesteroff.

It’s not often these days in media that we see any deep historical context in reporting, since staff budgets are often cut to the bone, leaving little time for research. In the pre-internet era, the Nelson Daily News maintained a complete archives of its 100-year plus history of journalism, and even paid a staff member to maintain it, Doris Bradshaw. Bradshaw was also one of its star reporters. Those archives thankfully were donated to the Shawn Lamb Archives at Touchstones and are an incredible resource.

In the classical model of journalism, this kind of historical continuity wasn’t seen as a mere frill or cost that could be cut, but an essential component of informed reporting. Without historical context, errors are too easily made and then perpetuated in the written record. And without accurate facts, how are we to learn from history?
