LETTER: Landlords have it tougher than a lot of people realize

Dear editor,

Dear editor,

Once again a writer has complained about evil landlords charging excessive rents.

So tired of hearing that!

I have been both a renter and a landlord. I truly believe that I left homes better than when I first moved in, however, that is rarely the case. Landlords have worked hard and made a big investment. It is a business and not a social service.

Landlords regularly lose thousands of dollars in rent as it is virtually impossible to collect from delinquent tenants. By the time a landlord can evict a tenant who is flagrantly disrespecting the property, irreparable damage can have occurred as well as months of non-payment. Tenants do have a lot of rights. Sadly, it is the norm for an apartment to need major cleaning and repairs following a tenant’s departure. It is not an easy business, and there are many risks and challenges.
