The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 15 gives a great thank you to the citizens of Abbotsford. The 2013 Remembrance Day parade and service had the highest attendance in recent years. This witnesses to the importance of this Canadian solemn occasion.
During the week leading up to November 11th the sale of poppies and wreaths took place. This year from all donations over $57,000 was raised. This is a record amount in support of the Poppy Fund, all to be used locally. These financial contributions support veterans and their families. The Navy, Army and Air Cadets are also given some money to help ensure that presence of this Canadian youth program is available locally. Several bursaries will be available to further the education of children and grandchildren of veterans who qualify for assistance.
Every year in September local schools have the opportunity to enter the Legion Remembrance contest. Various age and grade groups are invited to submit posters, poems and essays promoting the theme of Canada’s sacrifice for democracy. This year’s prize winners will share in recognition at three of Abbotsford schools.
Many organizations and individuals help the Legion during the Remembrance events. The Royal Westminster Regiment, the Air Cadet Band and Squadron, the Army cadets, and the Veteran Associations all stand with the Legion. The City of Abbotsford staff, The Police Department, The Fire Department, St. John Ambulance, Saphire Sound Systems, Tim Horton Restaurants, and the Clayburn Middle School Choir are a few of our many supporters. All are appreciated.
We thank the public and community for their support. We also acknowledge with thanks this newspaper for giving us such good promotion and coverage.
It is appreciated, lest we forget.
Yours truly,
(The Rev.) Art Turnbull
