We who live on Seventh Avenue in Mission are blessed to have traffic start at 4:45 a.m. to wake us up as a majority of Mission residents work far outside the community.
We also are on the fire truck route to let us know whenever a incident arises, as well as heavy traffic and constant theft and vandalism. Also, after having our home appraised, we find living on a busy street makes our home worth less than if the same house was on a street a block north or south. Now we have the ill-considered bike lane to nowhere brought up by our mayor and council. It runs along Seventh Avenue (except the strip mall by the rec centre, which the city owns) from Stave Lake to Wren. I am not aware of any giant mall at either end employing hundreds of workers eager to bike to work, so why doesn’t it run down main arteries to Lougheed? So just running along the north side of Seventh Avenue and affecting all of us who purchased our homes knowing we had parking is a frustrating idea. We in the Lower Mainland pay the highest carbon tax in Canada, and, with our special blend of low carbon gas, we have the highest prices, unlike bike riders who already benefit from our roadways with no cost to them. I am sure the mayor and all council members lead by example and bike to city hall so they felt a bike lane to nowhere is in the best interest for us. Geographically, where Mission is and the amount of hills makes biking to work an unrealistic venture so we now have our own Mayor Moonbeam.
