Dear Editor:
THC legally available for those who choose to use it for recreation or medication is great. But as we know, marijuana is not for everyone.
My years as a regular smoker were disempowering and stultifying. And they exacerbated my depressive tendencies.
At the time I’d have argued the opposite and claimed that social circumstances were dragging me down but in great part it was the drug itself.
THC was slowing and scattering my thoughts and generally dulling my sharpness and attention span.
This fun little activity left me in a fog that reduced my self-confidence and ability to reason and make good choices.
Not surprisingly, when I quit smoking, I felt better as my synaptic connections returned to normal.
Certainly THC is a safer alternative to excessive drinking or the scourge of opiates but in my opinion, marijuana is insidious precisely because our culture tends to present it as harmless.
If you like it, great. But any intoxicant has the capacity to alter life for the better or worse and it’s up to each of us to monitor where we’re at with our vices of choice.
I’d hate to think THC would harm anyone who thinks that nothing bad could happen to them from this newly available substance.
