LETTER: Mayor’s meeting appreciated

Weekly letters to the editor from within the Sooke community.

Thank you Mayor Maja Tait, members of council and district staff for the Oct. 17 informal meeting at Sooke Community Hall.

I am pleased that a review of the official community plan is scheduled.

Of concern has been full-speed density development. What we have here is a waterfront destiny gem that I believe is being marketed in a hurry to be bigger and more. More in other places has never proven to be enough, the cost of infrastructure and its maintenance devouring increased tax bases.

I believe that density while lucrative for some, does not guarantee a nice place to live.

Of larger concern is what appears little attention being paid to climate change.

The scientific establishment is speaking of increased severe storms, higher water, drought and fires being an impending probability. To this I see no banning of plastic bags that are killing the precious seas. No demands for GMO labeling that could well be killing us. No initiatives for more community gardens. No move to make kitchen and garden waste into free organic soil locally. These and or other small endeavors that could well put Sooke on the map for being aware, receptive, thoughtful to necessary responsible lifestyles.

Again thank you for the open mike.
